Chefchaouen (Arabic: شفشاون Shafshāwan [ʃəfˈʃɑːwən]; Berber languages: ⴰⵛⵛⴰⵡⵏ Ashawen), also known as Chaouen , is a city in northwest Morocco . It is the chief town of the province of the same name, and is noted for its buildings in shades of blue. Chefchaouen is situated just inland from Tangier and Tétouan.
Chefchaouen is one of the most touristy places I visited in Morocco so two days there definitely felt like enough, but it’s so beautiful and unique that it was still worth the journey up into the mountains to see Morocco’s magical blue city. You can easily visit from one of the nearby cities on a tour.
Chefchaouen is much smaller than larger cities such as Tangier making it a popular stop for off the beaten path types of tourists, and also enjoys a reputation as being one of the safest cities in Morocco . This is certainly impressive considering how safe the majority of nation is.
Cultural Guidelines: Moroccan men don’t usually wear shorts . However, as tourists, it will be fine for you to wear shorts . If you want to fit in a little better, then you could consider packing long pants. Weather Guidelines: For most of the year, pants won’t be too hot.
Although Muslims are forbidden to drink alcohol , Morocco is a moderate Islamic country and you are likely to feel free to drink in moderation in private or where alcohol is being served. In medinas alcohol cannot be purchased in shops, although many riads and hotels offer it.
Sadly there’s no such thing as a Fez to Chefchaouen train , but the bus is a great option! The Fes to Chefchaouen bus I took with CTM was not only affordable, only 75 dirhams each way, but also very clean and easy. The journey took approximately 4 hours.
