Eid 2020 has been announced after attempts to spot the first faint crescent of the new moon on Friday evening. If the moon is seen, Ramadan is deemed to have ended; if it isn’t, then the month of fasting goes on another day and the next month (Shawwal) starts on the day after that.

Eid -Ul-Fitr 2020 will be celebrated on May 24. Eid -ul-Fitr and the first day of Shawwal may be announced tomorrow , i.e. May 23, 2020, after the moon-sighting committee spots the crescent. As the crescent is not sighted tonight, Saudi Arabia will be celebrating Eid -ul-Fitr on Sunday, May 24 2020.
Eid al -Adha (Id ul -Adha) is an Islamic festival falling on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja (Thou al -Hijja) to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son.

There are two major eids in the Islamic calendar per year – Eid al-Fitr earlier in the year and Eid al-Adha later. Eid al-Fitr is a three-day-long festival and is known as the “Lesser” or “Smaller Eid ” when compared to Eid al-Adha, which is four-days-long and is known as the “Greater Eid .”
Due to this, the Islamic calendar year is shorter than the solar Gregorian calendar year by 10 to 12 days. Thus, Ramadan and Eid “rotate” through the Gregorian calendar and can be celebrated during different seasons in the Southern and Northern hemispheres.
