The term Third World was originally coined in times of the Cold War to distinguish those nations that are neither aligned with the West (NATO) nor with the East, the Communist bloc. Today the term is often used to describe the developing countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Australia/Oceania.
The First World consisted of the U.S., Western Europe and their allies. The Second World was the so-called Communist Bloc: the Soviet Union, China, Cuba and friends. The remaining nations , which aligned with neither group, were assigned to the Third World . The Third World has always had blurred lines.
Third world countries are all the other countries that did not pick a side. This includes most of Africa, Asia and Latin America. As a society, the term “ third world country ” refers to countries with high mortality rates, especially infant mortality rates. They also have an unstable and inconsistent economy.
A Third World country is an outdated and offensive term for a developing nation characterized by a population with low and middle incomes, and other socio-economic indicators.
Examples of first – world countries include the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and some Western European countries . The ways that first – world nations are defined can vary by perspective.
Countries are now classified as developed, developing , or least developed. Iran falls under the developing country category due to its unstable economy, low GDP per capita, and high levels of poverty (40%). These were called third world countries .
By the first definition, some examples of second world countries include: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic , Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, and China, among others.
Italy , G7 member and Third World country .
Other terms sometimes used are less developed countries , underdeveloped nations , low and middle income countries (LMICs) and non-industrialized nations . Conversely, developed countries , most economically developed countries , industrialized nations are the opposite end of the spectrum.
Using the model developed during the Cold War, Mexico is technically a Third world country, but as we stated, I think we can all agree that “Third World ” is a pretty outdated and useless term. Other developing economies include:Costa Rica, China, Brazil, the UAE, and about 50 other countries!
The reasons for poverty in Mexico are complex and widely extensive. There is an agreement that a combination of uneven distribution of wealth and resources sponsored by economic and political agendas to favor the rich and powerful is a major contributor to the millions left behind.
North Korea is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. Because of its penchant for secrecy and isolation, exact metrics on the country’s economy are difficult to obtain. Best estimates place North Korea’s per capita GDP at less than $2,000, which indicates a wretchedly poor economy .
It’s considered a Second World country because it’s associated with the communist east (Russia, China, etc). No the definition of 1st/2nd/ 3rd World is not US aligned, Soviet aligned/non-aligned. It has always been a measure of wealth. It’s a 3rd world country , as in very poor.
