Morocco is a Northern African country , bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, between Algeria and the annexed Western Sahara . It is one of only three nations (along with Spain and France) to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines.
The Kingdom of Morocco is the most westerly of the North African countries known as the Maghreb – the “Arab West”. It has Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines, a rugged mountain interior and a history of independence not shared by its neighbours.
In 1777, Morocco was the first country in the world to formally acknowledge the United States as an independent nation. It is also crucial to note that Morocco has been a loyal and indispensable American ally during these trying political times in the Maghreb, of which Morocco is an integral part.
In 1859, Morocco went to war with Spain. Germany attempted to counter the growing French influence, leading to the First Moroccan Crisis of 1905–1906, and the Second Moroccan Crisis of 1911. Morocco became a French Protectorate through the Treaty of Fez in 1912.
Polygamy in Morocco is legal, but very uncommon due to restrictions that were introduced by the government in 2004 that mandated financial qualifications a husband must meet in order to marry a second wife . In addition, a husband must have written permission from his current wife before marrying a second wife .
Morocco has long been considered the most Western-oriented society in the Arab world. For Morocco is not an Arab country at all, but a Berber one with a deceptive Arab veneer. Half the Moroccan population speaks Berber, a Hamitic language similar to ancient Libyan with an alphabet that bears no resemblance to Arabic .
It’s very uncommon and frowned on to show a lot of affection in public. Holding hands in Morocco is fine. A hug here or there, a stolen kiss all fine in most situations. The more rural you are the more frowned on public displays of affection are.

During World War II , Morocco , which was then occupied by France, was controlled by Vichy France from 1940 to 1942 after the occupation of France by Nazi Germany. However, after the North African Campaign, Morocco was under Allied control and thus was active in Allied operations until the end of the war.
As a large and diffuse ethnic group, the Moors consisted mostly of Berbers from Morocco and Western Algeria, sub-Saharan Africans from Mauritania, Northern Senegal, and Western Mali, Arab Bedouins, and Arab elite mostly from Yemen and Syria.
The northern zone became part of independent Morocco on 7 April 1956 , shortly after France had ceded its protectorate (French Morocco). Spain finally ceded its southern zone through the Treaty of Angra de Cintra on 1 April 1958 , after the short Ifni War.
Motivation. Like most imperializing countries, the Spanish and French wanted to colonize Morocco because they wanted power. Feelings of nationalism made people proud of all that their country had achieved. France had already taken control of Algeria, which borders Morocco , and wanted to take over Morocco as well.
Before the advent of colonization and the imposition of the protectorate on Morocco , the country was fully sovereign, independent, and united. And the Sahara was under Moroccan sovereignty. During that era there was no entity whatsoever in the Sahara that was separate from Morocco .
