The geologic formations of the Atlas are rich in minerals. The Moroccan High Atlas in particular contains important deposits. Among these the most important economically is phosphate, mined principally in the Khouribga area.
The southwestern part is called “Anti- Atlas “. The Atlas ranges separate the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines from the Sahara Desert. Most of the people living in the Atlas Mountains are part of Berber tribes in Morocco and in Algeria. The mountains are named after the ancient Greek Titan, Atlas .
The northern Atlas Mountains are considered to be fairly young. Just like you, they’re still growing ! However, when mountains grow , it results in earthquakes and landslides.

Towering over the Atlas Mountains in southwestern Morocco, Mount Toubkal is the highest mountain in the country, standing at 4,167 metres tall. Toubkal is the tallest mountain in the Arab world and as an ultra-prominent peak (over 1,500 metres) it is one of the most exhilarating in the world.
TEMPERATURE & RAINFALL However, as there is no snow in the Anti- Atlas , you can still enjoy mountain life during Dec-Feb, with sunny days and cold nights. If you can handle hiking in the heat, July and August are hot, but not off-the-scale desert madness like the rest of Morocco.
Deep in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, the ancient Berbers live on, defying a harsh environment and remiaing loyal to their traditions and way of life in some of the most hard-to-reach parts of the African continent. The range lies north of the High Atlas , separated by the Moulouya and Oum Er-Rbia rivers, and south of the Rif mountains , separated by the Sebou River.

Overall, however, the Atlas can be categorized as a semi-arid mountain range between the tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean/Mediterranean and the massive Sahara Desert. The highest mountain in the Atlas is Mount Toubkal .
