The most common way of travelling to Morocco is going by ferry to Tangier. There are two regular routes: Algeciras – Tanger-Med Port ⎝ (one hour and a half by boat). This port is in Alcazarseguir, 50 kilometres away from Tangier and 30 from Ceuta.
A fixed crossing means a tunnel or bridge between Spain and Morocco at the narrowest point of the Mediterranean — the 15-mile-wide Strait of Gibraltar. At present the Mediterranean is crossed by ferries and ships linking European and African ports.
You can travel as a foot passenger, or with a vehicle if you ‘re planning on embarking on a grand Moroccan road trip. It’s important to be aware that Tangier-Med is a cargo port, located 25 miles/40 kilometers east of Tangier city center. Most ferry tickets include a bus transfer to the city.
You must have a valid passport with at least one blank page. Visas are not required for visits lasting less than 90 days. Visit the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco website for the most current visa information.
This channel (referred to as a strait) is called the Strait of Gibraltar. The Strait of Gibraltar has Spain and Gibraltar on the European side and Morocco and Ceuta on the African side.
Is Tangier worth visiting ? If you’re nearby than certainly it’s well worth a visit as it has a distinctly unique feel you won’t find elsewhere in Morocco . However, if you won’t be near the city it may not really be worth the time to reach it .
If you don’t have a car, a one-way ticket from Tangier to Tarifa with FRS Service is around 420 MAD (around 42 USD). A return ticket for a foot passenger will cost around 660 MAD or approximately 66 USD. With a car, a one-way ticket will cost 1920 MAD or about 192 USD .
The strait connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Spain from Morocco (and Europe from Africa). It’s about 10 miles across, but the strong current that flows in from the Atlantic almost always ensures you ‘ll end up swimming farther.
Strait of Gibraltar
A major problem arose when the engineers hired by the Spanish government discovered that the material under the Strait was extremely hard rock, making tunnelling impossible with the available technology. One engineering solution was to fix, using cables, a prefabricated concrete tunnel to the floor of the Strait.
