Just like the hundreds of bay islands that have vanished in decades and centuries past . Amid the slow, dispassionate grind of erosion, Tangier would ‘ve realistically gone within 100 years, maybe 200.
Twenty-two of those communities are in Maryland , most on the Eastern Shore, which is coping with sinking land and rising sea levels. The town of Crisfield , Md ., on the lower Eastern Shore, will face chronic flooding of more than half its land area within roughly 20 years, the study said.
Oceans rise at an average rate of six inches every 100 years. Sea level in the Chesapeake Bay rises at a faster rate than average because the land underneath the bay is sinking . During the last ice age, glaciers pushed the land surrounding the Chesapeake Bay upward. Melting ice causes the remainder.
In recent years, it’s been called the disappearing island , but for centuries in Maryland it’s been a staple. Scientists said rising sea levels and coastal erosion are putting Smith Island at risk of sinking into the bay, but that’s not how residents see it.
Once you’ve taken a short golf-cart tour, eaten lunch and purchased your obligatory Tangier T-shirt, there isn’t a lot left to do.
